POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
竹仙堂
Discover the sweets on offer at Chikusen-do, from fragrant mugwort mochi and savoury Domyoji to seasonal nerikiri. The shop opens at 9:00.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The mochi dough is satisfyingly chewy, with the fresh aroma of mugwort. Chikusen-do is a lovely place to stop for sweets like these. Some diners remember the delicate texture of the Domyoji and its gently sweet filling; others note a savoury hint of salt. With different textures and fillings to choose from, you could try a few varieties or take home a favourite as a gift.
Seasonal nerikiri are another reason to visit. Diners who chose winter peony, Santa, sasanqua camellia and Wabisuke camellia found them simple and gently flavoured. One recommendation is the smooth red bean paste filling in the monaka. You may also find kimi-shigure, uguisu sweets, dango and manju. The yuzu manju is praised for its fragrant citrus aroma. Alongside seasonal confections, dorayaki and mitarashi dango offer more options to mix and match according to your taste or the person you are buying for.
Chikusen-do is open from 9:00 to 19:00 and is closed on Tuesdays. With Japanese sweets available from the morning, it is an easy stop when you need an afternoon treat or a gift to take along on a visit.
